We worked together with Doncaster Council, Active Independence and Rotherham Council to develop a number of bespoke courses for Personal Assistants.

The courses are tailored to the needs of those supporting individual clients in the community and they aim to give advice and guidance in a work environment where compliance systems are not officially in place. This means that policies and procedures can be introduced and the training encourages PA's to determine processes with their employer that safeguards them both. It also ensures good record keeping for audit purposes.

Title:

Medication Awareness for PA’s

Duration:

3 hours

Course outline:

This 3 hour session provides awareness and administration training for medications and PA’s will develop an overall awareness of current legislation requirements and good practice relating to administering medication that safeguards both the PA and the employer.

What this course covers:

By the end of the course delegates will:
  • Know what a medicine is and the relevant legislation in order to convert the information in to a working procedure in their own employment
  • Understand their role and responsibilities around managing and administering medication
  • Be able to interact with prescribed medicines and follow correct audit procedures
  • Know the procedures for good record keeping and how to maintain good practice for safeguarding purposes
  • Have knowledge of time sensitive medications, dosage instructions, routes of administration and the importance of medicine labels
  • Have an awareness of what can go wrong and how to reduce medication errors

    Safeguarding Adults Awareness and Reporting for PA’s

    Duration:

    3 hours

    Course outline:

    This 3 hour session provides an update to PA’s on safeguarding adults in relation to the Care Act 2014 and with an emphasis on new legal duties and the procedures for reporting a Safeguarding concern. PA’s will gain an awareness of the factors which could place an adult at risk of abuse, the law and local policies to comply with and good documentation practice that ensures effective information sharing.

  • Understand the implications of the Care Act 2014 on safeguarding adults practice
  • Recognise revised terminology and implement it throughout any concern reported
  • Recognise an adult at risk of abuse or neglect
  • Have knowledge of national legislation, local policy and procedures for Safeguarding Adults

    Diabetes Awareness for PA’s

    3 hours

    Course outline:

    This 3 hour session provides the knowledge for PA’s to understand what diabetes is, how diabetes affects the body and the complications that occur, plus how to support individuals with diabetes in the management and monitoring of their condition.

    What this course covers:

    By the end of the course delegates will:
  • Explain what diabetes is, the different types, causes and risk factors
  • Know the history of diabetes
  • Understand how diabetes affects the body
  • Describe the possible short term and long term complications that may occur
  • Explain how to monitor blood glucose
  • Know the possible treatments for individuals with diabetes
  • Gain an awareness of the role diet plays in controlling diabetes, including some suggestions of which foods to swap/introduce into the diet

    Title:

    Diabetes Blood Glucose & Insulin Injections Theory Training for PA’s

    Duration:

    3 hours

    Course outline:

    This 3 hour session provides the knowledge for PA’s to understand in detail how blood glucose levels are affected in individuals with diabetes, how to test blood glucose levels and how to administer insulin via an Epipen, in order to better support individuals with these activities. Attendees should already have a basic understanding of diabetes and the normal physiology of diabetes before attending.

  • Outline what diabetes is compared with normal physiology and how it can be managed
  • Explain how blood glucose levels are affected and how to monitor them
  • Describe how to test blood sugar levels
  • List the types of insulin used
  • Identify viable injection sites
  • Explain how to use an Epipen to administer insulin
