Dementia Awareness

 Course Duration:

Half day (3 hours) or full day (6 hours)

Course Outline:

Dementia affects over 850,000 people in the UK with 1 in 14 people over the age of 65 having some type of dementia. If you support people with dementia (e.g. friend or family member) or are new to care work, then this awareness course is for you, as you will learn how to provide support and understanding in a person-centred way.

Group activities are popular on this course and emphasise just how a person with dementia may feel when trying to communicate. Solutions to common issues are then discussed between the tutor and other health care workers.

You don't need any previous qualifications or experience in order to benefit from this course - just a passion for people and a desire to make a positive difference to the lives of the individuals you support.

  • Understanding dementia, the most common types and their causes

  • Early signs and symptoms of dementia

  • The role of carers and others in the care and support of individuals with dementia

  • How to provide person-centred care

  • Communication techniques and how to interact with individual's with dementia

Who Should Attend?

Any individual who cares for or interacts with individuals with dementia. You could be a care worker in a residential care home or domiciliary setting, or a volunteer helping individuals out in the community, or someone who has family/friends with dementia. If you haven't been on an awareness course before, then this course would be ideal and beneficial to give you a basic understanding of dementia and person-centred care.

Certification:

Upon completion of either the half day or full day course, delegates will receive a certificate of attendance.
