Caring for Stroke Survivors

Course Outline:
This one day course aims to provide an understanding of how individuals can be supported to regain their skills and abilities following a stroke as they try to rebuild their life.
During the day, attendees will examine what a stroke is and who is susceptible to them. They will explore the concept of re-ablement and analyse the key issues following a stroke such as; sleep disorders, managing pain, nutrition, communication and swallowing difficulties as well as examining the psychological impact of a stroke on an individual.
Attendees will take part in group activities and discuss various case studies to enable them to understand issues including aphasia and dysphagia, anxiety and depression, as well as the physical effects following a stroke and will leave with practical guidance on how to improve the wellbeing of those who have had a stroke.

The definition of stroke
The functions of the different areas of the brain and how these may be impaired following a stroke
The impact of a stroke on an individual
Re–ablement and re-learning
Specific issues experienced by individuals following a stroke, such as; swallowing difficulties, communication differences, anxiety and depression, nutrition, sleep disorders and mobility

This course is beneficial to anyone who supports individuals who have a had a stroke. If you are involved in the care of individuals who have had a stroke, and you already have a very basic awareness of strokes, then this course is ideal for you.
